Slip ring systems for Nexans Cable Laying Vessel
The project
For Nexans’ innovative cable laying vessel, built by the renowned Ulstein Verft Yard, Vijselaar supplied two advanced slip ring systems. These systems play a crucial role in delivering power and transmitting signals throughout the vessel. They were specifically engineered to fit inside the carousel, where the cables are stored and managed. The project posed a unique technical challenge because of the complex construction around a central pillar in the carousel.

The approach
When developing the slip ring systems, modularity and reliability were key priorities. A traditional design would have made installation difficult due to the limited space and the central pillar in the carousel. That’s why we created an innovative, split design. The slip ring was divided into two 180° segments, enabling efficient installation without compromising performance or reliability. This process required precise engineering and close collaboration with both Nexans and Ulstein Verft Yard to ensure seamless integration.

The result
Vijselaar’s slip ring systems provide stable and reliable power transmission to the winches and various measuring instruments on board the Nexans vessel. This guarantees operational precision and continuity, which are essential for the safe and effective laying of subsea cables. In addition, the systems comply with the strictest maritime standards and are fully certified by DNV according to DNV-RU-SHIP: Rules for Classification: Ships (2024-07). This certification confirms the high level of safety and reliability of our solution.
