Two slip ring systems for NOV
The project
For a modern cable laying vessel, Vijselaar delivered two custom-made slip ring systems, designed to reliably supply power and data to heavy-duty carousels on both the upper and lower decks. The upper deck carousel has a capacity of 4000T, while the lower deck carousel can handle up to 5000T.
These systems were engineered for maximum reliability in maritime conditions and provide both power and data through rotating connections, which are essential for dependable cable laying operations.

The approach
This project involved delivering two different slip ring systems for the carousels, each with its own requirements: a lower deck system around a central pillar, and a compact system on the upper deck. For the upper deck carousel, we used a strong pot design to make installation and maintenance easier.
Because the client wanted to do the cabling themselves, all terminal blocks were built directly into the housing and current collectors. This allows the connections to be made straight to the slip ring, making installation more flexible and simple.
Transparant project management
During development, we kept a shared online project folder for both systems. This tracked progress and updates step by step, keeping everyone informed and ensuring smooth collaboration.

Het resultaat
Upper Deck Carousel - 4000T
The upper deck carousel is equipped with a robust slip ring system in pot design, engineered for heavy-duty conditions. The system combines high electrical capacity with data transmission and a corrosion-resistant housing, ensuring uninterrupted operation.
Key specification
- Electrical capacity:
- 3PH + PE, 50A, 1kV
- 6PH + 2PE, 16A, 230V
- Data: 1Gbps ethernet
- Housing: SS AISI 316L, coated
- Protection rating: IP65
- Temperature range: -20°C to 50°C
Lower deck carousel - 5000T
Key specification
- Electrical capacity:
- 3PH + PE, 50A, 1kV (4 current collectors)
- 6PH, 16A, 230V (2 current collectors)
- Modular design: fits around central pillar Ø1100
- Material: SS AISI 316/316L, powder-coated RAL 9003
- Protection rating: IP55
- Temperature range: -20°C tot 50°C
Tailor-made solution
With this solution, the client now has two reliable slip ring systems that make cable laying safer and more efficient. The upper deck carousel can rotate continuously without risk of failure, while the modular lower deck design installation and maintenance easier. Thanks to the integrated terminal blocks, engineers have full flexibility to carry out their own cabling, saving both time and costs. This project demonstrates how customization and maritime robustness go hand in hand.
